Overview
Social Determinants of Health and root causes of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) are often misunderstood, which is detrimental to patients and communities.  SUD and OUD rates have increased in Southeast Idaho and are a public health critical attention focus. Providers must learn to better recognize the Social Determinants of Health barriers to care for their patients while also understanding behavioral health and SUD/OUD intersectionality. A behavioral health provider will describe methods to improve retention, treatment, and engagement of SUD/OUD patients. Two panelists will describe their lived experiences with OUD and recovery.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Improved knowledge in retaining SUD/OUD patients
  2. Improved knowledge in recognition/understanding that SUD/OUD is a chronic medical condition
  3. Improved knowledge in improving a welcoming environment for stigmatized, marginalized populations
  4. Improved knowledge in barriers of SUD/OUD treatment and care
  5. Improved knowledge in unintended consequences of poor engagement
